What’s New at MaineOrtho

What’s New 2011

Fall 2011

Maineortho is excited to announce the addition of Dr. Sam Scott to our practice.  Dr. Scott is a Board Certified surgeon who specializes in the surgical and non-surgical management of hand, wrist, and elbow injuries and ailments.  Dr. Scott has previously been in solo practice in the greater Portland area and has achieved prominence through his expert and compassionate patient care as well as his involvement in the medical community, where he has served as the Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Mercy Hospital, and now serves as the Chair of the Department of Surgery.  Dr. Scott came to the area after having completed his training at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Medical School and a Hand Surgery Fellowship at Roosevelt-St. Luke’s Hospital in New York.

Maineortho is very pleased to announce our new partnership with Nova Health.  Nova Health is an organization whose purpose is to continually improve the art and science of partnering with individual patients to proactively improve the health of the population in a fiscally responsible manner.  The most prominent member of Nova Health is Intermed, one of the premiere medical practices in Northern New England.  We look forward to our collaboration with Nova Health and Intermed as we work to improve the quality of patient care and the patient experience.

Us… Only Better

In late 2010 we made a number of improvements at MaineOrtho- most recognizably changing our name from Maine Orthopaedic Center to MaineOrtho!  We made the change to simplify things; to make our name easier to remember for our patients and referring doctors, but we certainly didn’t stop there.  We have more clearly identified each of our doctors’ areas of specialty interest, so patients can find the surgeon best suited to address their needs.  We have also updated our web page to make it easier to use, added the ability for appointments to be requested on line, and created a series of home exercise videos than can help alleviate some very common aches and pains- and maybe even help you avoid a doctor’s visit altogether!  Enjoy our upgrades and know that our commitment to personal attention and excellence in orthopaedic care will never change!

Dr. Perlmutter joins MaineOrtho

MaineOrtho is very pleased to welcome Dr. Gary Perlmutter to our practice.  Dr. Perlmutter is a recognized expert in diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the shoulder.  He is a former director of the Shoulder Clinic at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and continues to practice at Mass General as he develops his practice in Maine, which is focused solely on treatment of injuries and ailments of the shoulder.

Taking the Lead

It’s no secret that these are very turbulent times in the health care system.  All those involved in providing care face enormous challenges in providing our patients with the highest quality service and care, in a complicated and changing environment, in a way that is as affordable as possible.  Physicians understand these problems better than anyone, and need to be involved in creating the solutions.  We at MaineOrtho are rising to the task by taking leadership roles in our hospitals and communities.  Some of the roles and responsibilities we have assumed include:

  • Dr. Hanley is the chairman of the board of the Daniel Hanley Center for Health Leadership.  The organization was founded in memory of Dr. Hanley’s father, Dr. Dan Hanley, an innovator and leader in healthcare in Maine.  Since its founding in 2002 the Daniel Hanley Center for Health Leadership has worked to build a solid foundation of healthcare leadership for Maine’s future.  Its mission is to catalyze a sustainable culture of collaboration, innovation, and values driven leadership across the broad healthcare community in Maine and beyond.  Dr. Kuhn is a graduate of the Hanley Center Health Leadership Development Course.
  • Dr. Hanley is a board member of the Community Physicians of Maine
  • Dr. Kuhn is the Chairman of the Southern Maine Orthopaedic Management Company (SMOMC), which consists of local orthopaedic surgeons across many practices, gathered to help Mercy Hospital develop and run an outstanding orthopaedic department focused on highest quality orthopaedic treatment and patient service while reining in out-of-control cost.
  • Dr. Kuhn also serves as the Treasurer for the Maine Medical Center’s Medical Executive Committee, after serving a two year term as a member-at-large on the committee.
  • Dr. Hanley is the vice-chairman of the division of total joint replacement at SMOMC, where he has helped oversee the development of a great patient education program, the coordination of medical coverage for our medically frail patients, and negotiations with implant vendors that will save several hundred thousand dollars a year.
  • Dr’s Barr and Gramse co-chair the division of trauma at SMOMC, where excess and duplicative equipment has been eliminated, and treatment of patients with hip fracture is being standardized and coordinated, while a program for community follow-up and treatment of osteoporosis is being developed.
  • Dr. Barr serves on the Maine Medical Center transfusion committee helping to make sure blood transfusion medicine is as safe and up to date as possible.
  • The MaineOrtho surgeons have worked alongside the Maine Health Management Coalition (MHMC) to develop ways to measure quality performance among orthopaedic practices statewide, which has led to the publication of orthopaedic practice ‘grades’ on the MHMC website, which help guide patients toward quality care.
